Any character on the keyboard that is not a letter or a number (with
the exception of the .
and _ characters) are
called metacharacters. These characters (e.g. ; % !
~ * ? [ ] $ | < > ) have a special meaning in the operating
system. Some are used as substitutions for other characters while
others are used to modify the behavior of other characters.
Tip:
Do not to use metacharacters when naming files and directories.
Of course, you can use the hyphen(-), dot (.) and underscore ( _
) because they are not metacharacters.
