Using last line mode you can issue commands that change the way vi behaves. For example, you can toggle the display of line numbers, print invisible characters (like paragraph marks), etc. To accomplish this use the set command from last-line mode. The options are listed here for you:

:set noic Searches should ignore case
:set ic Searches should not ignore case
:set nonu Hide line numbers
:set nu Show line numbers
:set noshowmode Turn off mode display
:set showmode Display current mode of operation
:set nolist Turn off the display of invisible characters
:set list Display invisible characters such as Tab and end-of-line
