There are a few other button besides the Main Menu Button that will come in handy as you work with GNOME:
  • Just to the right of the Main Menu Button is a button with a picture of a question mark. This button will launch the help utility.
  • The next button shows a picture of a toolbox. When clicked it will launch the GNOME configuration tool which is used to change the way your GNOME system behaves.

  • Right next to the Control center button is a button that looks like the GNOME foot in front of a monitor. This will launch a terminal program (which gives you access to the command line).

  • To the right of the terminal button is usually a button that will launch Netscape Navigator, a popular web browser.

  • Next to that is a small, square area that is divided into four smaller squares. These squares depict the four desktops that are available to you for running applications. Each desktop can have its own applications running that are not displayed in the other desktops. This is useful for keeping your environment neat and organized.

  • Next to the desktop switcher are two small buttons, one on top of the other. The one on top (with the up arrow) displays a list of open windows, selecting a window from this list will bring it to the foreground. The one on bottom (with a picture of a question mark) launches the GNOME Pager Settings utility that you can use to change the way applications are displayed in the Pager.

  • The large area next to the two smaller buttons is the Pager, where active applications are displayed.
