Installing the CD-ROM

The companion CD-ROM contains author source code, plus an assortment of third-party tools and product demos. The disc is designed to be explored using a browser program. Using Sams' Guide to the CD-ROM browser, you can view information about products and companies and install programs with a single click of the mouse. To install the browser, follow the next instructions.

Windows NT Installation Instructions

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

  2. From File Manager or Program Manager, choose File | Run.

  3. Type <drive>\setup and press Enter. <drive> corresponds to the drive letter of your CD-ROM. For example, if your CD-ROM is drive D:, type D:\SETUP and press Enter.

  4. Installation creates a Program Manager group named DDG with Visual C++4. To browse the CD-ROM, double-click the Guide to the CD-ROM icon inside this Program Manager group.

Windows 95 Installation Instructions

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the AutoPlay feature of your Windows 95 system is enabled, the setup program will start automatically.

  2. If the setup program doesn't start automatically, double-click the My Computer icon.

  3. Double-click the icon representing your CD-ROM drive.

  4. Double-click the icon called Setup.exe to run the installation program. Follow the on-screen instructions that appear. When setup ends, double-click the Guide to the CD-ROM icon to begin browsing the disc.

Following the installation, you can restart the Guide to the CD-ROM program by pressing the Start button and selecting Programs, DDG with Visual C++4, and Guide to the CD-ROM.

NOTE

The Guide to the CD-ROM program requires at least 256 colors. For best results, set your monitor to display between 256 and 64,000 colors. A screen resolution of 640 by 480 pixels is also recommended. If necessary, adjust your monitor settings before using the CD-ROM.
